Responses of multiple structural and functional indicators along three contrasting disturbance gradients

چکیده

Ecosystem functioning and community structure are recognized as key components of ecosystem integrity, but comprehensive, standardized studies the responses both structural functional indicators to different types anthropogenic pressures remain rare. Consequently, we lack an empirical basis for (i) identifying when monitoring alone misses important changes in functioning, (ii) recommending sets metrics best suited detecting ecological change driven by pressures, (iii) understanding cumulative effects multiple, co-occurring stressors on function. We investigated variation stream ecosystems along three gradients (10–16 independent sites each) increasing impact arising from agriculture, forestry river regulation hydropower, respectively. For each stream, quantified abiotic environment, composition four organism groups basal processes underpinning carbon nutrient cycling streams. assessed responsiveness multiple biodiversity, based variance explained effect size metrics. Along a gradient agricultural impact, diatoms fish were most responsive overall, significant was detected at least one aspect composition, abundance and/or biodiversity every group . In contrast, our did not vary significantly gradient, possibly due contrasting, antagonistic concentrations turbidity process rates. The exception detritivore-mediated litter decomposition which increased up moderate levels nutrient. Impacts marked diatoms, increasingly frequent hydropeaking seasonal regulation. Among indicators, algal biomass accrual declined with hydropeaking. Few or varied forest management, macroinvertebrate diversity fungal accrual. Together, these findings highlight challenges making inferences about impacts disturbances level data alone, pinpoint need identify optimal associated human activities.

Distribution of specialist and generalist species along spatial gradients of habitat disturbance and fragmentation

In this paper, we tested whether the spatial distribution of a given species in more or less fragmented and disturbed landscapes depends on the species habitat specialization. We studied 891 spatial replicates from the French Breeding Bird Survey (FBBS) monitored at least two years during 2001 2005, and two independent landscape databases measuring respectively landscape fragmentation and recen...

Dispersal Ecology of Desert Mosses Along Gradients of Elevation, Wildfire Disturbance and Local Niche

Propagule soil-banks are important for colonization and for the maintenance of regional diversity among bryophytes of temperate regions, yet they have not previously been reported from hot desert ecosystems and little is known about the relationship between soil-bank diversity and elevation. I used emergence germination methods to explore patterns of species composition and richness in bryophyt...

Quadratic Variation in Old-field Species Richness along Gradients of Disturbance and Nitrogen

We followed species richness, colonizations, extirpations, and turnover for eight years in 16 combinations of disturbance and nitrogen addition applied to a 30-yr-old Minnesota field. Four levels each of disturbance and nitrogen were applied in a completely factorial design, producing 16 treatments. There were four replicates of most treatments and 14 replicates of the four extreme treatments (...

the effect of functional/notional approach on the proficiency level of efl learners and its evaluation through functional test

in fact, this study focused on the following questions: 1. is there any difference between the effect of functional/notional approach and the structural approaches to language teaching on the proficiency test of efl learners? 2. can a rather innovative language test referred to as "functional test" ge devised so so to measure the proficiency test of efl learners, and thus be as much reliable an...

Intraspecific growth and functional leaf trait responses to natural soil resource gradients for conifer species with contrasting leaf habit.

Interspecific relationships among species mean leaf traits, performance and species resource/climate distributions help provide the foundation for a predictive, functionally based plant ecology. Intraspecific responses of leaf traits and performance to resource gradients and how these vary among species may be equally important but have received less attention. Here, we examine relationships be...
